Academics – An Overview

Emerald Heights Academy seeks to cultivate in each of its students a natural curiosity and love for learning, leading to a solid preparation for higher education and professional careers. Students are challenged by a balanced curriculum of phonics-based reading, math, science, technology, history, religion, Spanish language, physical education, music and art. High academic standards and personal attention provide a strong foundation for the success of each student.


PreK 3 & 4

Emerald Heights Academy offers Pre-K for ages three (3) and four (4) which nurtures the strengths, interests and personalities of each student. In addition, our teachers address a student's needs with personal attention and work with parents to provide individualized instruction and direction.

SUBJECT AREAS:


Language Arts

With teacher assistance, students are learning to be attentive while listening and viewing; recite and develop speaking skills; begin to grasp the alphabetical principle; read phonetic text and figure out new words; construct rhymes and isolate sounds in spoken words; increase vocabulary and comprehension skills through print materials and storytelling; and develop coordination skills needed to write legibly.


Mathematics

Students are beginning to understand how to represent the physical world with mathematical language and symbols; to solve simple problems with teacher assistance; to understand counting, comparing and simple addition and subtraction; and to recognize and copy simple patterns.


History

Students are learning to describe obvious differences between past and present; undertake basic sorting and sequencing activities by using pictures, objects or events from a story.


Arts and Music

Art projects help students to learn creative expression, colors and shapes, and to explore a variety of media. The Music program includes learning religious, folk and children songs, finger-plays, and rhythm.


Religion

The Religion program includes Bible stories, stories about the Saints, religious holidays and special feast days, prayers and virtues.


Special Activities

Children learn how to perform through a variety of seasonal celebrations, including a Christmas play, Grandparents & Special Friends' Day, Dads & Donuts, Moms and Muffins. Pre-K 4 students attend field trips.

Elementary

Our goal is to help each student to reach his or her full potential. Emerald Heights Academy believes that education involves the development of key intellectual abilities including analyzing, synthesizing, relating and evaluating.


Our advanced curriculum is strong in content. We address each student’s needs with personal attention and work with parents to provide individualized instruction. Teachers help to form effective study habits which encourage critical thinking and reflection. Students gain confidence and poise through the practice of public speaking.


Lower Elementary (Kindergarten - 2nd Grade)

SUBJECT AREAS:


Language Arts

Program components include: reading, grammar and composition, handwriting, phonics, spelling, vocabulary development, listening, speaking and study skills.


Mathematics

Program components include: numeration/operation, measurement, computation, geometry, problem solving, data analysis, patterns and functions, fractions and decimals, and analytical skills.


Science

Program components include: general science integrating earth, life and physical science and introduction to the scientific processes.


History and Geography

Program components include: map skills, United States history and the study of ancient civilizations.


Religion

Program components include: Bible history, sacraments, traditional prayers and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.


Spanish Language

Students learn Spanish through songs, games, literature and cultural awareness activities (a natural acquisition approach). Program components include: listening, speaking, vocabulary development, and phonics.


Technology

Program components include: each classroom is equipped with computers for student use.


Art

Program components include: creativity in variety of media, fine motor control and art appreciation.


Music

Program components include: vocal music and theory, introduce various styles of music and different tempos and beats. Learn religious, folk and children's songs.


Physical Education

Program components include: spatial awareness, gross motor skills, various team sports and emphasis on good sportsmanship through all activities.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day, Dads and Donuts, Moms and Muffins, Science Fair, Poetry Appreciation Day, Presidential Physical Fitness Challenge, Catechism contest, All Saints Day celebration, Christmas program, class field trips, Mad Science, Daisy and Chess Clubs.


Upper Elementary (3rd Grade - 5th Grade)

SUBJECT AREAS:


Language Arts

Program components include: literature appreciation and analysis, grammar and composition, spelling, vocabulary, critical reading, listening, speaking, viewing and study skills.


Mathematics

Program components include: mathematical reasoning, fractions and decimals, data analysis, patterns and functions, whole and mixed number operations, metric system, statistics and probability, geometry and algebraic concepts.


Science

Program components include: general science integrating earth, life and physical science, with scientific inquiry and reasoning.


History and Geography

Program components include: developing an understanding of the world in spatial terms, characteristics of places and regions, human culture and social systems, development of human kind and early civilization.


Religion

Program components include: Bible history, sacraments, traditional prayers, the Catholic catechism and liturgy.


Spanish Language

Students build on prior knowledge to develop reading, writing and expanded speaking activities. Students begin to read and write in Spanish. Students continue to develop cultural awareness of Spanish speaking countries. Program components: Students begin to work with a textbook and workbook format.


Technology

Program components include: keyboarding, word processing, desktop publishing, graphical and presentation software.


Art

Program components include: drawing, painting, mixed media and art history.


Music

Program components include: vocal music and theory, introduce various styles of music and different tempos and beats. Learn religious, folk and children's songs.


Physical Education

Program components include: fitness training and testing, various team sports such as basketball, soccer, baseball and emphasis on good sportsmanship through all activities.

Middle School

Personal attention and small class sizes allow students the opportunity to achieve their full potential. Emerald Heights Academy offers a complete academic and social experience for students allowing them to excel academically and develop leadership skills. Emerald Heights Academy believes that education involves the development of key intellectual abilities including analyzing, synthesizing, relating and evaluating. Active participation, creativity and problem solving are also important parts of middle school academics.


As students prepare to make decisions and influence our world, they are challenged to think critically and integrate Christ-centered principles into their lives. Our goal is to positively prepare students for the future and help them fulfill the unique mission for which they are created.

SUBJECT AREAS:


Language Arts

Program components include: literature appreciation and analysis, grammar and essay composition, spelling with an emphasis on Latin roots and Greek origin, vocabulary development, critical reading, listening and public speaking, viewing and study skills.


Mathematics

Program components include: advanced mathematical reasoning and operations using measurements, patterns and functions, pre-algebra and algebra which include conceptual areas such as number theory, geometry, data analysis, probability and statistics. Algebraic models and representations are used as a basis for instruction to help students understand how math relates to the world.


Science

Program components include: earth, life and physical sciences. Earth sciences consist of ecology, and environmental science which incorporate conceptual areas such as structure and history of earth, natural resources, oceans, weather and earth's place in the Solar System. Life science includes conceptual areas such as life processes, cells, living organisms, human body systems, health and genetics. Physical science encompasses conceptual areas such as chemistry, matter, motion, forces, energy, electricity, magnetism and waves.


American History and Geography

Program components include: history, geography, government, and economics to develop an understanding of how the principles of the American republic form the basis of a pluralistic society in which individual rights are secured. Important concepts include the cause, course, and consequences of historical events in the United States.


Religion

Program components include: God as revealed in the Old and New Testament, the value and importance of the sacraments, The Catechism of the Catholic faith, as well as traditional prayers.


Spanish

Program components include: reading, writing and speaking activities, developing a deeper understanding and appreciation of the cultures of Spanish speaking countries.


Technology

Program components include: word processing, desktop publishing and digital graphic design.


Art

Program components include: drawing, painting, mixed media and art history.


Physical Education

Program components include: fitness training and testing, a variety of team sports with an emphasis on good sportsmanship.
